Celebrate the Journal of Ecology Centenary Year

Journal of Ecology - 100 Years

Journal of Ecology was the first ecological journal in the world. It was established as the official publication of the newly formed British Ecological Society in 1913 under the leadership and guidance of the Society's first President, Sir Arthur Tansley FRS (1871–1955). In celebration of the Journal of Ecology 100th anniversary, a Centenary Symposium was held, in September 2011. A group of internationally-renowned researchers were invited to talk on topics in which the Journal of Ecology has published major contributions over the last century, and in which significant progress is currently being made. The contributors to the Centenary Symposium produced written versions of their papers for publication in the Journal of Ecology's Centenary Special Issue.

Visit the Wiley-Blackwell stand to find out more about how to access Journal of Ecology content, and pick up a free BES laptop sleeve.

Read our new Virtual Issues for free

We've created a number of Virtual Issues which tie in to the theme of this year's ESA conference. Just click on the links below to read these for free.

Molecular Ecology   This Virtual Issue of 'From the Cover' papers is intended to highlight many of the most high-profile papers published in Molecular Ecology over the past three years. A wide diversity of topics is represented, ranging from biodiversity monitoring using environmental DNA to analyses of feral transgenic grasses to the discovery of a cryptic crocodile species from mummy DNA.

Ecology Letters   As human populations continue to grow it becomes increasingly important to understand human effects on biodiversity and the functioning of ecosystems. In this Virtual Issue, the selected articles are intended to provoke thought about how to tackle a theme that challenges us all, as well as to promote a broader understanding of the problems involved.

Journal of Applied Ecology   Successfully mitigating the effects of climate change on living organisms and societies can be expected to rely on a good understanding of the processes leading to biodiversity loss, as well as relying on novel, integrative, applied research that engages with society and supports decision making processes at local, national and international scales. Because of its unique scope and broad audience, the Journal of Applied Ecology plays a key role in supporting the emergence of such research.

Read the Virtual Issue.

Journal of Biogeography   The generality of the increase in the number of species with the physical space sampled, the species–area relationship, is a fundamentally important biological pattern, of considerable significance for conservation biogeography. This virtual issue of the Journal of Biogeography serves to illustrate the development of ideas concerning the various forms of the species–area relationship.
